The Deutsche Mark (DEM) was introduced in 1948 as the official currency of the Federal Republic of Germany, replacing the Reichsmark. It became a symbol of West Germany’s economic stability and was considered one of the strongest currencies in the world until the adoption of the euro in 2002. The term “mark” comes from the Middle Ages, when it referred to a unit of weight for gold and silver, later also used as a coin.
1 mark was divided into 100 pfennigs. The word “pfennig” comes from Old German and referred to a small-value coin, sharing the same etymological root as the English “penny.”
