San Marino has used the euro (EUR) since 2002, under a special monetary agreement with the European Union. Previously, its official currency was the Sammarinese Lira (SML), introduced in 1860 and pegged to the Italian Lira (ITL). The term “lira” comes from the Latin “libra,” a unit of weight used in Ancient Rome.
1 euro is divided into 100 cents. During the lira era, the subdivision was the centesimo, derived from the Latin “centesimus,” meaning “one hundredth.”
