The US Dollar (USD) was officially adopted in 2000, shortly after the referendum for independence and the withdrawal of Indonesian occupation. The name “dollar” comes from the Spanish silver peso, also known as the thaler, which circulated widely in Asia and the Americas. The $ symbol originated as a stylized 8, recalling that the Spanish dollar was worth 8 reales.
1 dollar is divided into 100 cents. The word “cent” comes from the Latin “centum,” meaning “hundred.”
