The Pound Sterling (GBP) is the official currency of Northern Ireland, as in the rest of the United Kingdom. The word “pound” comes from the Latin “libra,” a unit of weight in Ancient Rome, while “sterling” derives from Old English “steorra” (star), referring to the star stamped on the first Norman coins. Banks in Northern Ireland issue their own banknotes, but all are guaranteed at parity (1:1) with the British Pound.
1 Pound Sterling is divided into 100 pence. The word “penny/pence” comes from Old German “pfennig” and referred to a small-value coin.
