The New Zealand Dollar was introduced in 1967, replacing the New Zealand pound, as part of the transition to the decimal system. It is also nicknamed the “Kiwi,” after the national bird of New Zealand. The term “dollar” originates from the German thaler (“Joachimsthaler”), which, through Spanish influence, became “dólar” and was later widely adopted in colonies and Commonwealth states.
1 New Zealand Dollar is divided into 100 cents. The word “cent” comes from the Latin “centum,” meaning “hundred.”
