Luxembourg adopted the euro (EUR) on January 1, 2002, replacing the Luxembourgish franc (LUF), which had been in use since 1854. The word “franc” comes from the Latin inscription “Francorum Rex Johannes Dei Gratia,” found on French coins minted in 1360, meaning “King of the Franks by the grace of God.”
1 euro is divided into 100 cents. During the franc period, the subdivision was the centime, derived from the Latin “centesimus,” meaning “one hundredth.”
