The French Indochina Piastre was introduced in 1885 by the colonial administration, replacing local and foreign currencies circulating in the region. The word “piastre” comes from Italian, meaning “thin plate of metal,” originally used for large silver coins.
1 piastre was divided into 100 cents. The term “cent” derives from the Latin “centum,” meaning “one hundred.”
