Finland adopted the euro (EUR) on January 1, 2002, replacing the Finnish markka (FIM), which had been the official currency since 1860. The name “markka” comes from the German word “mark,” used in the Middle Ages as a unit of weight for gold and silver. It is also etymologically related to the German mark.
1 euro is divided into 100 cents. During the markka period, 1 markka was divided into 100 penniä, a term derived from the German “pfennig,” used for small-value coins.
