The South Vietnamese Dong was introduced in 1953 and circulated until 1975, when South Vietnam was reunified with the North. The word “dong” comes from Vietnamese “đồng,” meaning “copper,” since early coins were made of this metal.
1 South Vietnamese Dong was divided into 100 xu. “Xu” was the traditional Vietnamese name for small-denomination coins.
