The East Caribbean Dollar was introduced in 1965, replacing the British West Indies Dollar. It is the common currency for eight states and territories, including Saint Lucia. The term “dollar” comes from the German thaler, which, through Spanish influence, became “dólar” and spread widely throughout the Americas and the Caribbean.
1 East Caribbean Dollar is divided into 100 cents. The word “cent” comes from the Latin “centum,” meaning “hundred.”
