Micronesia has used the US Dollar as its official currency since 1986, under the Compact of Free Association with the United States. The term “dollar” originates from the German thaler (“Joachimsthaler”), which, through Spanish influence, became “dólar” and was later widely adopted in the Americas and Commonwealth states.
