The Libyan Dinar (LYD) has been the official currency of Libya since 1971, when it replaced the Libyan pound. The name “dinar” comes from the Latin “denarius,” a Roman silver coin worth 10 asses, first issued in 211 BC. The term was adopted in the Arab world and used by many Muslim states.
1 Libyan dinar is divided into 1,000 dirhams. The word “dirham” derives from the Greek “drachma,” transmitted through Arabic, and originally referred to a unit of weight and later to a coin.
