The East German Mark (M) was the official currency of the German Democratic Republic between 1948 and 1990, until reunification with West Germany. The word “mark” comes from medieval German tradition, where it denoted both a unit of weight and later a coin. The East German Mark was strictly state-controlled and had a different value from the West German Deutsche Mark.
1 East German Mark was divided into 100 pfennigs, the term deriving from Old German “pfennig,” meaning a small-value coin, equivalent to the English “penny.”
