The Birr (ETB) has been the official currency of Ethiopia since 1894, when Emperor Menelik II issued the first silver coin called birr, equivalent to the Maria Theresa thaler, which had been widely circulating in the region. In Amharic, “birr” means both “silver” and “to be white,” reflecting the material from which the coin was struck.
1 birr is divided into 100 santim. The word “santim” derives from the French “centime” and means “one hundredth.”
